As the great Ferris Bueller put it: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Sometimes you definitely should stop and look around. Other times, you have no choice. Unfortunately, right now I have no choice. Photography is a hobby, something that challenges me and allows me a creative outlet. I have met hundreds of people due to this hobby and I am forever thankful for it. I’ve taken pictures of babies, of wives, girlfriends, couples, dogs, landscapes, buildings, events, products. You name it, I have shot it. How cool is that? In the 5 years I have been trying to shoot as a hobby, I have managed to shoot all manner of subjects and sometimes I even get paid for it! It’s usually not much, definitely not enough to cover expenses, but hey, five bucks is five bucks.

So because photography is a hobby, sometimes other things entire our lives that make us stop. This is certainly not a happy time in my life right now but that’s the best time to stop and look around. It helps you appreciate what you have. So while I have not had the chance to raise my camera to my eye and capture an image as often as I would like, I appreciate having such a fun, creative, challenging hobby. I’m sure once I can get back to it, I will appreciate it even more.

Since Santa brought me Adobe Lightroom for Christmas, I have been cataloguing all of my old shoots. As I’ve been rolling along, I’ve decided to update the blog by importing my old photoblog text with some updated photos from the shoots. Up until now I’ve used a Word Press plug-in to host images and put them into a nifty slide show. Well no more! I have officially joined the land of Flickr, where I can join the Strobist group (like I need to drink any more of that Kool-aid!), post my images, and with a few clicks, enjoy other people’s work as well. I feel a little nekkid right now, for the most part this site and my work have been seen by friends, family, stalkers, and a few others who stumble onto it. Putting things on Flickr open me up to all kinds of trouble: image theft, critique, more stalkers. I’m keeping my fingers crossed this isn’t the case. I’m hoping maybe I can meet other people who are like me who like to try to capture beauty in its many forms, learn about light, and push the technology to do things it wasn’t meant to do, all while having fun, meeting cool people, and learning all along the way.

To be continued…

Originally Krystal and I had talked about shooting for the Breast Cancer Awareness project and other types of shots. We had a slight change of plans when she decided to bring a college friend along with her to the shoot. Krystal didn’t think the friend would be comfortable with the shots we had been talking about so we decided to do it another day. They had been having all kinds of adventures: the bad ice storm knocked out power to their hotel, so they weren’t going to stay there, every other hotel with power was booked so it seemed like they wouldn’t have any place to stay. Krystal is from the Capital District so after a few frantic phone calls she managed to find a place to crash and another friend to hang out with for the weekend.

Since the friend tagging along was last minute and considering they still had their luggage with them in the car, we did a quick introductory shoot with some of the things she had brought, including a Christmas themed outfit. Afterwards we talked about when we might shoot next. We’re hoping for February break. I’m looking forward to it, Krystal is great!

Grandpa Stanley was a pretty cool guy: fought in WWII and the best stories from that experience was: he was shot down twice, was smuggled to safety behind enemy lines, and the parachute that saved his life was made into the wedding dress my Grandmother wore and the family christening gown. He was a highly intelligent man. He passed away the day my daughter was born 2 years ago in June. He’s the reason I like to shoot pinup style (his pinup survived each time he was shot down). I think about him every time I have a photoshoot.

Grandpa Moore was a blue-collar worker, told it like it was, and also a good man. He too was intelligent but in a common-sense, street-smart way. I think every day was a fight for him in one way or another and I truly believe that he did his best with what he had. He passed away this February. I got a little bit of $$$ as an inheritance. It isn’t much, but it may be enough to buy a newer model camera. I haven’t decided yet if I’m going to do it, but I like the idea that as I take pictures, one of my favorite hobbies, that I will be thinking of two of my favorite people with each press of the shutter. I never in a million years thought that they would somehow be connected to something that I take such pleasure in and that is so personal. it’s funny how life is. . .

I am a proud papa of 3: a 15 year old girl, a 14 year old boy and a 14 month old girl. The teens are my wife’s from a previous marriage (and mine from this marriage) I enjoy being their dad, but they make it pretty clear that they do not view me that way. They have a dad, I’m the guy their mom decided to marry. I still treat them and consider them my own and am always looking for a little of my influence in their actions and mannerisms. I’ve know them for 7 years now and though it’s been hard, I really appreciate them.

With the Pea-pod, I get knocked out daily. Not because she is mine by blood, but because I didn’t get to experience these moments with the other two. The other day I was being goofy, doing stupid jumps into the pool. Every time I surfaced, there was Baby Girl, clapping for me, the ray of sunshine that is her smile warming me. I’ve never had this situation where someone in my life looks up to me unconditionally. I am her hero just because I am her daddy. It’s overwhelming and a bit intimidating. I’ve never had any trouble being Me–for good and bad–but Jo-Jo makes me want to be Me, but BETTER. It’s inspiring I guess. I just realized that what I see in her eyes is how I feel about her: I am awed, I adore her, I could watch her for hours without blinking, I look forward to the next adventure, the next milestone, the next word that comes out of her mouth.
Being a parent is awesome…
